The cultivar was bred by nurseryman John M. Garabedian of Fresno, California and resulted from a cross of Cardinal and an unnamed, unpatented seedless bud sport. Garabedian received US Patent protection for Sugraone in 1972. The rights of Sugraone were assigned to Superior Farming Company following the sale of Garabedian’s nursery operation. In 1986, Superior Farming Company sold its grape and stone fruit operations, including its patents, patent applications and rights to apply for plant variety protection in other countries to Western Fruit Acquisition Inc. Western Fruit subsequently changed its name to Superior Farming but was merged with Sun World International in 1989 giving them the assignment to the plant breeder’s right for the variety Sugraone. Today, Sugraone is owned and marketed by Sun World under the brand name Superior Seedless.
